"To live longer, men should marry women with college and advanced degrees, new research indicates. A new study of 20,000 married men by McGill University in Canada found that the more schooling a man's wife had, the less likely he was to be at risk for heart disease. Men with a college education who married women with even more education fared the best, study leader Dr. Grace Egeland tells the International Journal of Epidemiology. The reduction in disease was significant--as much as 50 percent. Men married to women who didn't go to college were more likely to smoke, to be overweight and sedentary, and to have high blood pressure and cholesterol levels--all risk factors for heart disease. 'This may be because the women make decisions about nutrition and lifestyle,' says researcher Dr. Haakon Meyer of the University of Oslo. Educated women are more likely to be knowledgeable about health. They're also more likely to hold high-paying jobs, easing their husband's financial burden and lowering his stress levels." |
